Learners choose the qualification level they feel ready to sit for. LanguageCert Young Learners ESOL

LanguageCert Young Learners ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) is a suite of English Language qualifications created specifically for young candidates (7+ years old). These exams aim at motivating children to improve their English language skills and help them become familiar with the examination process for their future endeavours. The two exams assess candidates at approximately the pre-A1 (Fox) and A1 (Owl) levels.

Who are the LanguageCert Young Learners ESOL Qualifications intended for?

Non-native English learners:

  • indicatively 7+ years old
  • who attend English courses at a Language School or with a Private Tutor
  • who have attended an English course and want to test their abilities and progress
  • who have attended a summer camp abroad and want to assess their improvements

What can I use a LanguageCert International ESOL qualification for?

LanguageCert International ESOL qualifications can be used internationally:

  • to meet school curriculum requirements;
  • for university entry and/or graduation;
  • employment and career progression.

How long does it take for candidates to receive their LanguageCert International ESOL results?

The results are released 10 business days after the exam day.

How long does it take for candidates to receive their LanguageCert International ESOL certificates?

E-certificates are sent with the release of results. These are automatically issued and are included in the price of the exam.
Hard-copy certificates are sent a week after the release of results and can be requested during the initial application stage and will incur an additional cost of €10.

Who informs candidates of their results?

LanguageCert will inform candidates of their results directly.

Who needs to be contacted if a certificate is lost?

Candidates need to contact LanguageCert if their certificates are lost.

How long are the certificates valid for?

LanguageCert International ESOL certificates are valid for life.

Are LanguageCert certificates sent directly to candidates?

Certificates should be sent directly to candidates.

What happens in case a person succeeds only in either the Written or the Spoken exam?

Successful candidates are awarded with a certificate of the exam, while they can re-sit the exam they did not succeed in when they feel ready. They can re-sit the exam as many times as they like and there is no time limit on re-sitting the exam.

Who assesses the Spoken exams?

The Spoken exams are recorded and the sound files are sent to LanguageCert Markers for assessment.

Does the Test Centre get involved in the assessment?

Marking is carried out by LanguageCert. The Test Centres do not get involved in the assessment.

What is the pass mark? What grades are awarded?

Grades awarded are: High Pass, Pass or Fail.
Pass Mark for Written exam: at least 50% overall in all sections. No thresholds or limitations per section.
Pass Mark for Spoken exam: 50%.

What is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)?

The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is an international standard for describing language ability. It describes language ability on a six-point scale, from A1 for beginners, up to C2 for those who have mastered a language. This makes it easy for anyone involved in language teaching and testing, such as teachers or learners, to see the level of different qualifications. It also means that employers and educational institutions can easily compare LanguageCert qualifications to other exams in their country.

Are the levels of LanguageCert International ESOL qualifications mapped to levels of the CEFR?

All levels of the LanguageCert International ESOL exams are aligned with the levels of the Common European Framework.

Do candidates have to take any course to sit for the LanguageCert International ESOL exams?

Candidates may sit for the exams straight away, if they feel confident about their level of English, and are not required to complete any course in order to take the LanguageCert International ESOL examinations. Do the learners have to follow a certain course book?

All English course books can be used as these qualifications assess the level of each candidate’s English language proficiency, and not whether the candidate is familiar with a specific exam format.

What is the duration of the exam?

The duration of the exams depends on each level.

Can the learners take the LanguageCert International ESOL Written and Spoken exams separately?

Candidates can take Written and Spoken exams of the same or even of a different level together or one at a time according to the candidates’ convenience (e.g. In case they need to provide only proof of the speaking ability, for example for a job, Speaking can be taken as a standalone exam.

Is the Spoken exam taken by candidate pairs?

Each Candidate is examined individually. The interview of the Spoken exam is conducted by an Interlocutor and evaluated at a later stage by a LanguageCert Marker.

Can the learners use a dictionary during the exam?

Candidates are not allowed to use dictionaries or any other aids during the LanguageCert International ESOL exams.
