[Back to all articles](https://www.ihmalta.com/blog.html) **Reviewed by:** IH Malta Admissions Team · **Facts checked:** 28 July 2026 · 2 min read Choosing a language course is mostly a sequence of small decisions, and they are easier if you take them in the right order. Start with your goal, not with the price list. ## 1\. Decide what you actually need English for Everyday confidence, work, an exam, university, or simply more free time in a new country lead to genuinely different courses. An exam candidate and a remote worker should not book the same thing, even at the same level. ## 2\. Establish your level honestly Adult group courses run from A1 to C1, and Intensive English 30 starts at A2. Exam preparation requires a minimum of B1+. You do not need to know your level precisely before enquiring — every booking includes an online placement test before arrival, and that test, not your own estimate, determines your class. ## 3\. Choose your weekly intensity | If you want to… | Consider | | --- | --- | | Keep most of the day free | General English 10 — 10 lessons, 7.5 hours | | Make balanced progress | General English 20 — 20 lessons, 15 hours | | Make English the main focus | Intensive English 30 — 30 lessons, 22.5 hours | | Work on one specific goal | Private lessons — 45 minutes each, tailored | | Prepare for IELTS or Cambridge | Exam preparation — EPC10, EPC30 or Combined | ## 4\. Fix your dates Most adult courses start every Monday with a minimum of one week, which makes planning simple. If you are considering eight weeks or more, look at long-stay options instead: they carry different weekly rates and include holiday entitlement of two weeks for every twelve booked. ## 5\. Decide where you will live - **Belview Residence** — for students aged 18+, about seven minutes on foot from school, with single, twin and triple rooms, air-conditioned bedrooms, a shared kitchen, roof terrace and lounge. - **Host family** — half-board or full-board, roughly 20–40 minutes from school, and a lot more daily contact with English outside class. Both options include a mandatory arrival transfer. Belview also collects a €50 refundable damage deposit on your first day, and an environmental contribution of €1.50 per night applies, capped at €22.50 per stay. ## 6\. Ask the questions that actually matter - What is the maximum class size? (Here it is 15, averaging around 12.) - Who confirms my level, and when? - What is included in the price, and what is charged separately? - What happens if the class I want is not running that week? - What do I need for a certificate? (At least 85% attendance.) ⓘ · IH Malta is not an examination centre. If you need to sit IELTS or a Cambridge exam, the team can help you register, but the exam fee and the exam date are set by the external provider. ## 7\. Get it costed before you commit Course, accommodation, transfers and the administration fee are separate lines. The cost calculator gives an instant estimate, and a personalised quotation confirms the real figure for your dates. ## Related pages ### Find your course A short questionnaire with a recommendation.
